U.S. and Jordan Strengthen
Cooperation on Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights |
|
July 6 - In cooperation with USAID,
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) of the U.S. Department of Commerce
began a four-day workshop today on border enforcement of intellectual property
rights (IPR). Participants include over 50 officials from the Jordan Customs
Department, the Public Security Department, the National Library, the Jordan
Institute for Standards and Metrology, ASEZA Customs, and other Jordanian
government agencies. The workshop, which was opened by U.S. Embassy Chargé
d’Affaires Daniel Rubinstein and Jordan Customs Department Director General
Miteb al-Zaben, highlights the close cooperation between Jordan and the U.S. in
strengthening the protection of these rights across borders. “Such efforts
demonstrate the continued commitment of both our nations to ensure that the
marketplace respects and protects the creativity of its people and companies,”
U.S. Embassy Chargé Daniel Rubinstein said.

U.S. to Provide US$450 Additional Economic and Security
Assistance
to Jordan |

July 1 - At a joint press conference today, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ms. Suhair Al-Ali and U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Mr. David Hale announced that U.S. President George W. Bush signed on June 30, 2008 legislation that includes US$450 million in supplemental economic and security-related assistance to Jordan for fiscal years 2008 and 2009.
Jordan will receive US$200 million in economic assistance and US$50million in security-related assistance for FY 2008. The bill also includes an additional US$100 million in economic assistance and US$100 million in security-related assistance for FY 2009. This supplemental assistance is in addition to the regular economic and security-related assistance provided by the United States to Jordan for fiscal years 2008 and 2009. Full Text |

| Jordan, U.S. Align Security Standards in International Trade Partnership |
June 29 - Jordan and the United States Saturday agreed to align security standards in international trade partnership programs critical to both countries by signing a mutual recognition arrangement that recognizes compatibility between Jordanian and U.S. cargo security programs.
Jordan Customs Department Director General Metib Wesewes Al-Zaben and U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner W. Ralph Basham in a ceremony in Brussels agreed to mutual standards in Jordan’s Golden List Program and the U.S.’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program. Full Text |

June 18 - American Ambassador David Hale today visited Aqaba and participated in several U.S.-supported initiatives designed to benefit small business owners and students in Aqaba Governorate. He emphasized the strong ties between Jordan and the United States as well as U.S. support for Jordan’s efforts in economic and educational development.
Ambassador Hale attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Development Employment Fund, the Business Professional Women Association, and the USAID-funded Jordan Tourism Development Project. Full Text |

| Jordan and U.S. Cooperate to Strengthen Rule of Law |

June 10 - American Ambassador David Hale and Minister of Justice Ayman Odeh today marked the successful completion of the automation of Jordan’s court system in a ceremony. The Ambassador and Minister of Justice, who were joined by Chief Justice Mohammed Samed Al-Rakkad and other judges and ministers, noted the success of Jordanian-American cooperation in the area of judicial reform. “Jordan has made great progress in modernizing its entire judicial system to be more responsive, more transparent, and more independent,” Ambassador Hale said. Middle East and North African Business, Legal and Civil Society Leaders Strengthen their Regional Network |

June 9 - More than 250 of the Middle East and North Africa’s most promising entrepreneurs, lawyers, business and civil society leaders will convene at the Dead Sea in Jordan from June 9-11 to participate in a conference hosted by the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). While in Jordan, these leaders will learn from experts’ wealth of knowledge, while providing opportunities to expand personal and professional networks. Full Text
